Butters Canyon

My morning rides often start with a peaceful climb through Butters Canyon; a short, secluded stretch of road that winds its way through native woodland in the Oakland Hills. Often blessed with morning light dancing through the forest canopy and the sound of song birds, I enjoy the immense sense of calm this stretch of road brings, and helps set the tone for the ride ahead.

Often overlooked by frequented pedestrians and cyclist, Butters Canyon plays a key role in preserving Oakland’s native eco-system. Positioned at the headwaters to Peralta Creek Watershed, it stretches from the Oakland hills to the San Leandro Bay. Habitats like Butters Canyon help protect Oakland’s native landscapes and wildlife from being displaced by urban development and disappearing for good.
